Bear Creek Lumber has been a strong supporter of educational projects for our local young people. The company sponsors children and young adults, from pre-school through college, in various programs. The local Montessori school, Little Star, starts at 18 months and goes to kindergarten. Close-Up is a program that sends High School age students to Washington DC every year.
Bear Creek Lumber sponsors youth sports activities in a firm belief that learning sportsmanship is essential for young people. Among the many teams Bear Creek has sponsored are the Methow Valley youth baseball program, Babe Ruth baseball, AAU basketball, youth soccer, girls junior high softball, Nordic ski team, and the Methow Valley Football camp. Four members of the Bannick family have coached in one or more of these programs as have several other employees. The Bannick family has even built a softball / youth baseball field for public use as a practice field. Former employees Sy Bannick and Ray Schade supervised the local Babe Ruth program, after having been former players themselves. Sy was also an assistant coach with the local high school football program.
Bear Creek Lumber was asked to donate to a local Eagle scout project that would create nesting boxes for both these creatures. The boxes are small, requiring limited amounts of lumber. Built with 1 x 6 or 1 x 10, the houses are easily assembled, and can be placed throughout a community. BCL was happy to oblige. The company has always been dedicated to conservation, and has donated materials for bird and bat projects in the past.
