Dan Troxel/Decks By Dan - Kansas City, KS
Customer Dan Troxel likes to know where his wood is coming from, so he visits Bear Creek Lumber whenever he can. Recently salesman and staff photographer Merle Kirkley took Dan on a drive through our “backyard”.
You can see Dan pictured below with Liberty Bell Mountain in the background. Dan does world class deck jobs, which have been featured in magazines, such as Deck Builder. He shared these pictures of a recent project with us. The project used premium tight knot Western Red cedar for decks, rail and trim .

Merle, Thought you’d be interested in how the Cedar deck went. So far the only fasteners in the rails are the bolts holding the posts (covered with square pegs). The rails are all held together with mortise & Tenion joints. When done, the rails will be held firm with screws covered by square pegs. All the decking was resurfaced, sanded and has 3 coats of Penofin. All the rail material was milled, surfaced, sanded (to 220 grit belt), sealed with a marine sealer, and 2 coats of Penofin. The wood looks so gorgeous it blows some people away. I even caught a few drive bys stopping to take pictures. Currently, I’m working on the cherry floors so we will be needing more lumber next month (I hope).

Bears Love Bear Creek Lumber !!
Just writing to say that I personally love my Bear Creek Lumber deck and so do the bears!!!! I have a Bear Creek Lumber 5/4 x 6 RE Western Red Cedar deck in my back yard. It’s about 400 s.f. in total. Quite a few bears have used it, but this is the first time I was able to take a picture of one. I thought it might be a good one for your monthly newsletter. I live in Juneau, Alaska and I know you have many loyal customers here – in fact, I was “turned on” to BCL my one of them.
My deck is a low-profile design with creosote joists and beams. I was following with interest a while back other customer’s recommendations for deck treatments. I tried quite a few. All the Thompsons are junk – none lasted even a year. The best I’ve used so far is the Olympic Deck Stain guaranteed for 2 years. I have not tried the Behr products, but I’ve heard good things.

Dear Bear Creek,
I obtained this tight knot decking from Bear Creek Lumber and sold it to Jim M.. Jim had the decking sanded and sealed with Superdeck Clear Finish before screwing it down. He will have one more coat put on.
