D and Better Clear Grade | Douglas Fir
Specifying D and Better Clear Grade Douglas Fir (DF) Lumber.
According to the Western Wood Products Association (WWPA), “D and Better Clear Grade finish lumber … has many of the fine appearances of C select grade…is between the higher finishing grades and the Board grades as many pieces have a finish appearance on one side, the reverse side showing larger or more numerous characteristics”.

Available Board Grades
- cv – Clear Vertical Grain – This is the top quality grade available.
Clear Vertical Grain Sample. The WWPA tell us that for finish grades ” pieces 5″ and narrower are graded from both edges and the better side or face; the reverse side may be one grade lower. Pieces 6″ and wider are graded from the better side or face and one edge, the other edge and reverse side may be one grade lower”.
- d – D & Better – Appearance grade for paneling applications.
This is a high quality graded lumber that acording to the WWPA, “has many of the fine appearances of C select grade…is between the higher finishing grades and the Board grades as many pieces have a finish appearance on one side, the reverse side showing larger or more numerous characteristics”.

- sd – Select Deck
Lumber of this grade is intended primarely for use in housing and light construction where it is exposed, as paneling, shelving and other uses where a knotty type of lumber with the finest appearance is required.
Available Timber Grades
- ss – Select Structural – Timberframes and post and beam buildings can have great looks too.
Select Structural Posts and Timbers are graded primarily for strength, but can be used also for good appearance. The picture shown above is an example of super high end Select Structural Grade Douglas Fir. Most select structural Douglas Fir is not this clear. We can get them but if you just call for Select Structural it will not look this nice and clear. Select structural is not the same as a clear grade. It will still have knots, checking and other natural occuring characteristics allowable within the industry standard grade rules.
- 1 – #1 and Better – A great grade for applications where appearance and strength are both important.
- 2 – #2 and Better
#2 Post and Timbers are used in all general construction, designed for many uses where serviceability is important. Characteristics may include – seasoning checks; grain: medium; knots: sound, not firm fixed, unsound knots are limited to 1/2 the size of other knots; pitch streaks, shake, skip, stain, torn grain and wane.
